The Stud Farm

Francisco Bessa de Carvalho founded the stud in 1989. His passion for horses occurred in the early years of his life. He started riding as a child at the Picadeiro do Lumiar in Lisbon, where he met Luis Valença who was his Master in his early years of training. In 1984, he joined the Portuguese School of Equestrian Art (EPAE) as a rider, selected by its founder Dr. Guilherme Borba, also his Master. Since then, he has been one of the members of the School and he is currently a Picador. In 1992, he assumed the duties of Riding Instructor and Director of Quinta da Fonte Santa - Equestrian Centre, where he continues today. Additionally, he receives riders from diferent nationalities for individual lessons and riding clinics.

From 1999 to 2012, he was a National and International Judge of the breed and a member of the Grading Board of the Stud Book with APSL. Given his huge passion for horses and specifically for the Lusitano breed, he began as breeder in 1989. He is committed to several projects related to the Lusitano horse and its development in the World. Presently, Lusitanos d`Atela is a family project of breeding Lusitano horses by Bessa de Carvalho family.

Our Purpose

Under the maxim that when looking to future we must respect the past, Lusitanos d`Atela's main objective is to raise quality horses within the breed standard, combining high quality gaits and functionality with a great character. Above all, it seeks to breed Lusitano horses capable of competing at international level, while respecting the morphology and character that identifies the Lusitano Horse.
